Between April and June 1922 clashes occurred in Meath between pro- and anti-Treaty forces in Slane, Dunshaughlin and Athboy. Following the shelling of the Four Courts in Dublin, The Meath Chronicle of 1 July 1922 reported 'scenes in Navan of warlike character' - significant movement of Free State troops by railway, the commandeering of cards, lorries and provisions in Skryne and Kilmessan, and the arrests of several leading republicans in Navan and Trim.

On 5 July 1922 Michael Hilliard's Navan IRA company based at Curraghtown House, was joined by companies from Kilberry, Rathkenny, Clonngill and The Commons, bringing their strength to thirty tree men. A force of 200 Free State troops surrounded the house and a battle ensued that continued through the night. By the time Father Ellis of Dunderry and Father Kilmartin of Navan had brokered a surrender, George McDermott from The Commons and Seán Nolan of the Free State army lay dead.

Curraghtown, July 1922 brings together letters, family photographs, official minutes and other archival material from Meath County Archive, the British National Archives and the Military Archives of Ireland, and combines them with contemporary newspaper accounts to provide an overview of a lesser-known incident of the Civil War in Meath which caused much controversy and bitterness. This volume forms part of Meath County Council's Decade of Centenaries 2013-2023 programme.
