Learners and fluent speakers of Irish, get ready for a fun, fast and frenetic board game that will test your reflexes and how well you know your friends.

Successfully launched at Oireachtas na Samhna in Killarney, Lámha Síos brings life to the traditional dice and counter board game, by including a physical reflex response to the questions.

Lámha Síos is a board game (funded by COGG) where players throw a colour die to see which set of themed question cards to try. Themes include: about me, about you, about the place where we’re playing, about cultural knowledge (history, geography), about songs and rhymes and finally, for inveterate Trivial Pursuit fans, Irish grammar.

Every card has a question or a statement with only one correct answer: true…. or false?

Why the name, Lámha Síos? We’re all familiar with teachers encouraging pupils to put up their hands to answer a question or to make a comment… but this time, we want your hands to do the talking!

If you think the correct answer is ‘fíor’ (true), put down your left hand as quickly as possible. If you think it is ‘bréagach’ (false), slap down your right hand. Points are then calculated from the order of the pile of hands on the table… with much disagreement and teasing!

Lámha Síos is designed to encourage people to use the language in a fun way. Learners gain in confidence and understanding as they play and listen to the questions. Fluent speakers enjoy the inevitable confusion when people are too hasty in putting down their hands. Even an expert can make a mistake- and a beginner can be lucky!
