This book contains a selection of the work of Margaret Conway (1898-1974), local historian, writer and lecturer. They date from 1939 (a lecture on Oliver Goldsmith) to her last public lecture on Francis Ledwidge on the association of the launch of Alice Curtayne's biography in 1974.
Her extant work is considerable, and includes lectures given to Macra na Tuaithe, Irish Countrywomen's Association, The Meath Archaeological and Historical Society, The Boyne Valley Festival, The O Growney Memorial lectures and those given to students in primary and second level schools, Farm Schools, all celebrating the rishness of our heritage of place, literature and folklore. This is the first of a series of selections from her work for a new generation of people from Meath and beyond, in print and on the web.
Margaret Conway nee Callan completed her teacher training during the War of Independence, and taught in Kings Inns primary school up to 1923 and in Coolronan from 1923 until her retirement in 1956. She was Secretary of the Meath Archaeological and Historical Society, and first editor of Ríocht na Midhe from 1955 till 1967. She was active in the public life of Meath and served on the Vocational Education Committee, the Library Committee and on many voluntary committees including Connradh na Gaeilge and Muintír na Tíre. In a sense she was a sage called upon to add wisdom and experience to whatever new movement was being put in train.
