Any reader of this book may well ask how it is that the author can remember in such detail events that occurred so many years ago. The memories of the years are imprinted upon George’s mind and are vivid and clear. Such memories are here presented in this enchanting kaleidoscope. The colourful life of a colourful man that has lived during a great change in Ireland, makes for fascinating reading.
Although our paths have taken very different routes since we left Potora so many years ago, when we meet we always pick up where we left off before, to enjoy the hospitality and friendship of George and Louise and now George and Jean, whether at Bellinter House of yester year of Craystown House of today.
It could be said that he who is very central figure in hunting, shooting and fishing over the years is not always best fitted to write about those activities. However, George shows that this is not always so and has written this very personal narrative for his family, his wide circle of friends and even wider relationship. Those who are lucky enough to pick it up will find that they cannot put it down until they have read it.
George's story is taken from his skeleton diary, contemporary papers and from his own recollection. A man of clear judgement and opinions, George is never shy to express his views on and off the sporting field, the national press on matters of country life and rural development. Always honest and very direct I should say that he has never lost a friend by being the man that he is.
George says that he is laying down his pen now and that he will just keep singing. We raise a glass of golden wine to you, Sláinte.
