The signing of the anglo-Irish Treaty in the small hours of 6 December 1921 was a defining event in the life of Eamon duggan and the single event for which he is best known. Duggan's central belief was that if freedom could not be achieved under the terms of the Treaty, it would be the fault of the Irish people and not of the Treaty.

Using archival material from The British National Archives, An Chartlann Naisiunta na hEireann, The Military Archives and Leabharlann Naisiunta na hEireann, and material from the extended Duggan family, particularly research and interviews carried out by Mary Hayes, a cousin through marriage of Eamon Duggan, Peter Connell, scholar, editor of Riocht na Midhe and author of The Land and People of County
Meath 1750-1850 looks at the life and a political legacy which has, to date, largely gone unexamined.
