Gaius Valerius Catullus (84-54 BCE) is one of the most popular poets ever to come from classical Rome. His 116 poems have survived the rise and fall of civilisations and still retain their power to move the heart and shock the sensibilities. The Irish Catallus, which comprises the Latin text together with contemporary translations into Irish and English, follows a tradition of translating the classics into Irish which goes back to the 14th-century 'Imtheachta Aeniasa' - the first translation of Virgil's 'Aeneid' into a vernacular language.
